SAN DIEGO: Police were investigating two robberies during the weekend in which a lone robber said he had a weapon but never showed it.
The robber in each case was a tall black man in his 20s wearing a black sweat shirt or jacket. Police said they did not know if the cases were related.
The first robbery occurred about 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Best Western Golden Triangle Hotel on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard just west of Interstate 805.
The second robbery was reported at 6:27 a.m. Sunday at a McDonald's restaurant on Lake Murray Boulevard at Navajo Road.
In each case, the robber left with an undisclosed amount of cash. No injuries or arrests were reported.
In the McDonald's case, the robber walked through an unlocked rear door of the restaurant and forced four employees to give him money from registers and a safe, police said. Witnesses told police that the robber was about 6 feet 3 inches tall with a thin build. He wore a nylon stocking over his face, a black hooded jacket, blue jeans, blue gloves and white shoes, police said. He may have driven away in a dark gray sedan with black paint on the right front fender.

CHULA VISTA: A fiery crash involving a Porsche and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 805 on Wednesday morning was the result of a suicide, the Medical Examiner's Office said yesterday.
The driver of the Porsche, a 68-year-old man with no permanent address, died of blunt-force injuries to his head and chest in the crash at 7:11 a.m. on southbound I-805 just south of Main Street.
Witnesses told California Highway Patrol investigators that the 1989 Porsche 928 had been traveling about 120 mph in the freeway's fast lane when it suddenly crossed three lanes to the right and hit the slower truck, authorities said. The Porsche ignited soon after the collision. –M.A.
